Former President Barack Obama made headlines this week when he slammed President Joe Biden’s open border immigration policy as “unsustainable.” Obama has never been shy about criticizing his former vice president, and now it looks like he’s trying to distance himself from his old buddy’s immigration catastrophe. “Immigration is tough. It always has been because, on the one hand, I think we are naturally a people that wants to help others. And we see tragedy and hardship and families that are desperately trying to get here so that their kids are safe, and they’re in some cases fleeing violence or catastrophe,” Obama said. “At the same time, we’re a nation state. We have borders. The idea that we can just have open borders is something that … as a practical matter, is unsustainable.” Open borders are unsustainable (not to mention unconstitutional), but Barack Obama is the last person who should be criticizing someone’s too-lax border policies. SEE ALSO: A Nation of COVID Hypocrites Americans more than seven years old should remember Obama’s decision to grant amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants. That decision was made without the support of the people’s representatives in Congress, and the then-president flatly defied our constitutional system in a speech to the nation. “To those members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better, or question the wisdom of me acting where Congress has failed, I have one answer: Pass a bill,” Obama at the time. The fact that Obama can criticize Biden’s open border policy after making a statement like that proves that he still doesn’t understand the root cause of our current immigration crisis. SEE ALSO: The Time Has Come for Civil Disobedience Policies like Obama’s are precisely the reason we have hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants clamoring to get into our country. They believe, rightly, that if they can just get across the border and embedded into an immigrant community, a Democratic president will one day grant them amnesty. They know that Biden is unable to stand up to the radical wing of his party, and they know that living in America illegally won’t land them in much trouble under this administration. We can send more law enforcement to the border, ramp up enforcement, and even build a wall. But until the president stands up to his party and stops using open border rhetoric, we can expect the flood of illegal immigration to continue. That’s not likely to happen, of course. Joe Biden is a weak and failing president, and the crazy radicals have taken control of his party. My prediction? This crisis will continue until we install a new president in 2024, one who will hopefully end the open borders rhetoric and do his or her duty to protect the American people.
