During the pandemic, the walls of procedure, guilt, and precaution have been built up — and they’re only getting stronger. While citizens are being confined in the borders of their own property, illegal immigration is being encouraged. For months, American citizens have been told to stay at home. Stay at home, and COVID-19 will go away. Stay at home, and we have a better chance of “flattening the curve.” Stay at home, and your neighbors will live. During the Trump administration, immigrants were told to stay at home, too. In March 2020, the U.S. suspended non-essential travel on each border. That same month, the Border Patrol began “‘expelling’ individuals who arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border, without giving them the opportunity to seek asylum,” after the Centers for Disease Control issued an emergency regulation that, “permits the Director of the CDC to, ‘prohibit… the introduction’ of individuals when the Director believes that ‘there is serious danger of the introduction of [a communicable] disease into the United States,’” according to the American Immigration Council. But on Wednesday, Feb 24, President Joe Biden issued an executive order to lift the immigrant green card and work visa ban. Additionally, Biden will soon begin admitting illegal immigrants who are residing in a U.S.-Mexico border camp after a Trump-era policy that required they stay in Mexico until their immigration court dates. It appears that the Biden administration has no problem telling its own citizens to stay at home — while holding the doors wide open for others. This isn’t a surprise. For years, the democratic platform has been more concerned with “human rights” than the rights of citizens. As a Christian, I’m not opposed to caring for all humans. I am, however, concerned with a “republican” government that prioritizes the rights of illegal immigrants over the rights of legal citizens. But thousands of illegal immigrants enter the country every year — there’s no realistic way to test all of them, or administer proper treatment for the disease. Instead of acknowledging the rightful health risk illegal immigration poses, the Biden administration wants to prioritize the health of non-citizens over Americans. If protecting American lives was truly a concern, borders would remain closed. According to the original DHS report released in March 2020, “In order to limit the further spread of coronavirus, the U.S. has reached agreements with both Canada and Mexico to limit all non-essential travel across borders. CBP will no longer detain illegal immigrants in our holding facilities and will immediately return these aliens to the country they entered from – Canada or Mexico. Where such a return is not possible, CBP will return these aliens to their country of origin.” What’s changed between March and now? Has every other country eradicated COVID-19? Why do walls now only apply domestically?
