As tax season fades away and we move toward Memorial Day, many of us are naturally thinking about the federal government — our tax dollars, our responsibilities as citizens, and particularly the sacrifices made to secure our nation. Often those thoughts lead to the question of who really has the power in our republic. Many people reflexively say “Congress” or simply “Washington”.
But those responses miss the mark. They fail to answer or explain exactly who decides, who executes, and to whom do those people actually answer?
Of course, the Constitution established a framework of limited, enumerated powers. Today, that structure has been largely replaced by a system run by a network of “Beltway Insiders” — a wealthy elite of federal employees, massive contractors, and lobbyists. This is how a government meant to be of, by, and for the people descends into a lawless oligarchy where officials act as rulers instead of representatives.
The mechanisms of this power are clear. First, there is the notorious “revolving door”. How often have we seen corporate board members — especially those from pharmaceutical firms — transition seamlessly into appointed bureaucratic or even Cabinet-level positions in the Executive Branch. These individuals, whose wealth is often far beyond the typical American, “regulate” the very industries they once served. Once their “public service” is completed, back to the boardrooms they go.
Second, a good deal of legislation isn’t even drafted by the representatives we elect, but by “K Street” lobbyists and law firms. These influence peddlers spend billions annually — more than $5 billion in 2025 alone — to craft language that members of Congress are often happy to insert directly into bills and vote upon. This process ensures that special interests and massive federal contractors, who dominate the D.C. economy, are the primary winners of federal growth, while the average taxpayer nationwide covers the cost.
Business is good in Washington, D.C., and its environs. Several Northern Virginia suburbs, such as McLean, Vienna, and Wolf Trap consistently rank among the nation’s top 50 wealthiest, with median household incomes often exceeding $250,000–$300,000 and home values in the millions, far outpacing most of the country. This is a direct byproduct of the expansion of the federal government.
Yet when the power to decide and execute policy is concentrated among this self-serving, distant elite, accountability inevitably vanishes. We see the result in polling data: public confidence has eroded so severely that Congressional approval ratings have sunk as low to an astonishing ten percent.
The central question is simple: Are those in power accountable to the people? The answer is no. They answer to the network of money and influence that sustains their own power structure.
The genius of the Founders was that they anticipated this moment. They knew that Congress would never willingly limit its own power. That is why they included Article V in the Constitution. It gives “We the People,” acting through our state legislatures, a peaceful, lawful, and constitutional mechanism to take back our authority and restore the system to its intended design.
An Article V convention allows the states to propose critical amendments to permanently rein in our runaway federal government and restore balance. The movement focuses on three core areas:
- Imposing fiscal restraints to end excessive spending and crippling national debt.
- Limiting the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and its unelected agencies and employees, restoring state sovereignty.
- Enacting term limits for federal officials to combat entrenched power and ensure representatives serve the people, not the special interests who have turned the Beltway into an enclave for the wealthy influential elites.
By utilizing Article V, we honor the Constitution and those who have toiled and sacrificed everything to defend and advance it. We choose to govern ourselves, rather than being mastered as subjects by a bureaucratic oligarchy.
This path demands action and engaged citizenship, but it is the definitive step toward reclaiming our rights and securing liberty for generations to come. Are we ready to reinforce and strengthen the foundation that our forefathers risked all to establish? An Article V convention is the way to impose accountability and fidelity to the Constitution.
