Founder and CEO of Martin Capital, tech entrepreneur, and Substack writer Rod Martin fears that the exceptional American system of government isn’t aging well, not because its roots have failed us (quite the contrary), but because the modern apparatus of state has weaned itself from those roots.
After 250 years of immense political prosperity, both parties have twisted the Founders’ words “to achieve, frankly, authoritarian ends worse than those the Founders fought.” Since the dawn of the American experiment in liberty in 1776 and the advent of our Constitutional Republic in 1789, “errors have crept in,” Martin argued.
“We need a solution that closes the loopholes used to take power from the people.”
Fortunately, the Founders foresaw that such defects would inevitably surface. They openly acknowledged that the Constitution, while a truly extraordinary document, was also imperfect, established Article V as an editing tool, and charged the American people with using it.
As George Washington advised in his Farewell Address, “If in the opinion of the people, the distribution or modification of the constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the Constitution designates.”
In an X post, Martin referred to the Article V convention process as “an override,” “a state-driven process that doesn’t need Washington’s permission to shrink the size and scope of government.”
“The Framers designed this mechanism deliberately, with structural safeguards that prevent any faction from seizing control of the process,” he added.
Martin’s thoughtful commentary serves as a reminder that the people calling for an Article V convention aren’t unhinged or radical, but rather serious and reflective. Millions of Americans have realized that the federal government will never fix itself and, in fact, will only continue to stray from its life-giving roots if we don’t do something about it. Calling a convention isn’t about rewriting the Constitution; it’s about restoring it, purging the errors, and setting the stage for another 250 years of American success.
