If you were planning on attending the January 19 Women’s March in Humboldt County, California, then you’ll need to rethink your schedule. Organizers recently canceled the event, because the response had been “too white.”
In a Facebook statement, the organizers explained their rationale: “After many conversations between local social-change organizations and supporters of the march,” they decided they needed to “broaden representation in the organizing committee.”
“Up to this point, the participants have been overwhelmingly white, lacking representation from several perspectives in our community,” they wrote. “Instead of pushing forward with crucial voices absent, the organizing team will take time for more outreach.”
So let me get this straight. For a long time, social justice warriors complained about how white women were too tone deaf about issues of race and politics. So, when white women responded to their emotional please, they call it off? Because they’re white?
Another question is maybe more troubling to the feminist movement. Why isn’t it attracting more diverse women? Could this possibly have to do with the fact that this movement is no longer relevant to the lives of working women?
Either way, these feminists are using self-destructive identity politics to make a political statement about — wait for it — self-destructive identity politics. (So meta of them.)
Instead of separating ourselves by gender, why not work together for the common good of humanity? Why not finally admit to the fact that when men thrive, women thrive.
Or, conversely, when women thrive, men thrive. When parents thrive, children thrive.
Life is not a zero sum game.
