‘Frozen’ Actor Grabs Trump Flag from Audience Member During Curtain Call (or ‘Americans Behaving Badly’)

While the Broadway cast of “Frozen” took bows after Wednesday night’s performance this week, a front-row Trump-supporting audience member held up a “Trump 2020″ flag.

Why did he do this?  Because apparently there’s no realm in this nation that is not affected by politics.  Even musicals made for the enjoyment of children.  Because some people have to be jerks, insinuating their “most important thing” into other people’s entertainment.

Actor Timothy R. Hughes noticed the man, who wearing a MAGA visor, while he was taking his bows.  He immediately tossed it away and continued bowing.

Why did he do this?  Because apparently there’s no realm in this nation that is not affected by politics.  Even musicals made for the enjoyment of children.  Because some people have to be jerks, insinuating their “most important thing” into other people’s arrogant display of political preference.

Now, of course, this is yet another story of political polarization.  The Trump supporter stood outside the theater threatening to sue if he didn’t get his flag back.  The actor posted a self-congratulatory message on social media, claiming the high ground.

What does it say about our country and politics when a man at the show tonight felt the need to protest Disney’s Frozen on Broadway with a pro Trump flag?? How frightening is it that our show’s messages of love, acceptance, and diversity have become the opposition to supporting Trump? The curtain call is a thank you between actors and audience, a final connection to end a shared experience. I will not apologize for how I responded to the disrespectful man trying to interrupt this moment with a pathetic political platform. Not at our show! Here’s a thought experiment.  What if this musical had been running during 2008 and 2012.  What if an audience member held up an Obama flag?  Do you think Timothy Hughes would’ve been so quick to condemn that audience member’s actions?

Though it’s hard to know for sure, he probably wouldn’t have thought twice about it.  He may have even given the audience member an approving nod or a fist bump.

How about this?  How about not being a jerk whether you’re a Trump supporter or a non-Trump supporter?  How about letting people live their lives without constantly having to think about politics, especially when they are just trying to enjoy their day with their children?

How about just simply treating other people as you would have them treat you?

Here’s a tip.  If your “doing good” involves being incredibly rude, you’re doing it wrong.

Both sides need resist provocation, to be able to “let it go.”
