Almost every high school kid at one time or another has used the line, “That’s not mine! One of my friends must have left that here.”

Now, the Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez is using the same unconvincing line. Recently, he was photographed at Reagan International Airport carrying an $1800 carry-on bag.  I didn’t know such things existed, but apparently it is the ultimate status symbol.

Which is odd for a fan of socialism to carry…

Perez is an enthusiastic supporter of the new wave of socialism afflicting the Democratic party, saying in a recent interview that socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the “future” of the DNC.  He may be right about that, but that means that dark days are ahead for them. Socialism is a dangerous, horrible ideology that never works in the real world.  But – – hey – Perez’s kids think it’s cool.

“I have three kids. two of them are daughters. One just graduated college, one who is in college — and they were both texting me about their excitement over Alexandria because she really — she represents the future of our party,” Perez said. He also described socialist Maryland gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous “spectacular.”

Do you know what else is spectacular?  The Louis Vuitton Keepall Bandoulière 55 Damier Cobalt Canvas bag that Perez was carrying.  At least according to people who track such things.    But Perez — evidently — is such a man of the people that he pretends to carry his staffers’ bags at the airport.

“Nice try y’all, but he’s holding a staffer’s bag here at the airport. Tom does not own a Louis Vuitton bag,” DNC spokesman Michael Tyler said.

Um…  this doesn’t pass the straight-face test.  Plus, how much does he pay his staffers?  I’d apply if it didn’t mean you had to subscribe to a damaging economic philosophy that makes people poorer.

Here’s the bottom line: People should buy what they want, own what they want, and carry what they want.  Bags like this are status symbols for capitalists.  If people can afford it, and they want to show it off, more power to them.  But a party head that says “socialism” is the way, should not be carrying a bag that is a status symbol of the rich… even if he is carrying it for his overpaid staffer.

It is the height of hypocrisy.  It’s “socialism for thee, but not for me.”

Wait… did I just say “hypocrisy” when talking about the Democratic Party?

That’s redundant.  Sorry.

Here’s a great meme related to the way that socialism — as good as it sounds — works out in practical life:

Exactly.
